Are you covered for winter?

We’re well into fall and winter isn’t that far away, so we hope you’ve had your annual heating tune-up done by now (or at least have it scheduled). That service can lower your chance of a winter breakdown and help you use less fuel.

For total peace of mind, we recommend enrolling in our Heating Maintenance Plan, which provides you with two great options to save you money.

Our basic plan, available for only $59 per year, provides you with:

  • a discounted tune-up rate
  • 15% off any service invoice
  • credit toward a replacement system
  • no overtime charges for no-heat emergencies on nights or weekends
  • upfront pricing on all repairs, so you’ll know the cost before we do any work

Our higher-level plan, available for $269 annually, takes your coverage a few steps further and includes:

  • a no-cost tune-up
  • 50% off any service invoice
  • credit toward a replacement system
  • no overtime charges for no-heat emergencies on nights or weekends

Clocks, Batteries, Air Filters, and a few other tips from Hillside

Time to Fall Backwards
This upcoming weekend is a busy weekend for house chores. For those of us that still have manual clocks or VCR’s, it is the weekend to Fall backward in time. Historically this is always a great time to check smoke detector batteries and change your heating/air conditioning system air filters. It used to be easy to knock out these few house chores while wandering around spinning hands of clocks backward. Don’t let technological advancement and smartphones lull you into forgetting to change those batteries and air filters…unless, of course, you have in-house robots to do these menial tasks.

Change your air filter regularly
Depending on what type of air filter you have, it should be checked or changed every 1-3 months. Even if you have the expensive cleanable air filters that last an entire year, it is still worth a minutes time to give it a check for dirt or anything that might block airflow.

Is it time to consider replacement of your equipment?
Nobody likes to think about such a major expense, but if you have to, the payback time for newer more efficient equipment is getting shorter and shorter. An investment today can show payback in savings of utility costs in just a few years, not to mention much more efficiency, and not worrying about how much more life is left if your equipment. Hillside ALWAYS does free estimates on new and replacement equipment and we have financing available for those that qualify.

Consider a programmable thermostat

For a limited time, we are giving away a remotely accessible thermostat with a combination heat/air conditioner installation! Up to $800 value! These programmable thermostats are ideal for people who have a set schedule, leaving and returning home at the same time each day. A programmable thermostat will turn your equipment on and off to meet your schedule, so it is warm when you get home, but saving you money while you are away. If your schedule is a bit unpredictable, consider a programmable thermostat that you can access from anywhere you have your smartphone or Internet access. Turn your equipment on or off from anywhere, adjust the temperature, check outside temperature, and even change your program schedule whenever you need! Hillside is proud to offer a fantastic remotely accessible programmable thermostat, give us a call if you are interested or would like more info.

Don’t Weed Wack Your HVAC’s Electrical or Refrigerant Lines

“Careful with that weed wacker Eugene!” Outdoor electrical and refrigerant lines can be fragile.

It is yard work day, and you are quickly running out of daylight. “I know I can finish this up so I can have all day Sunday to do what I want”, is running through your head as you reach for the weed wacker to finish trimming. The sun has set behind the trees, and clouds overhead make it darker than you expected. You are along the side of the house finishing lawn trimming and you hear BZZZZ, SNAP, POW!!! Unfortunately, you have just clipped a line running to your outside air conditioner unit. These things happen, even to the most careful and handy of us.

Be extra careful with lawn equipment around your outside units. It is a great idea to keep the area around those units trimmed, clean, and free from debris. When doing maintenance around those areas be extra mindful that there are refrigerant lines under pressure (Freon®), high and low voltage electrical wires running nearby.

If you do find yourself in the unlikely situation of broken lines, keep Hillside in mind for repairs. Instinct will tell you that some duct tape and wire nuts will fix the predicament, but you deserve better than that.

Can cutting my lawn can affect my air conditioner?

Grass cutting season is here and it can affect the performance of your air conditioning unit. Grass clippings, dust, dirt, and pollen are in the air and in your yard. They can settle in, on, and around your outdoor air conditioning units. Try not to blow grass at your outside unit, but if that is unavoidable, spend a minute rinsing the outside units with a garden hose. Dirt and dust clippings can be easily and quickly rinsed out. Keeping the outdoor unit free of debris and settled dust can go a long way toward maintaining efficiency and avoiding untimely breakdowns.
Hillside HVAC offers an air conditioner tune-up that can ensure your unit is performing optimally. Optimal performance increases efficiency, can lead to energy bill savings, prolong the life of your unit, and avoid untimely breakdowns. Consider an air conditioner tune-up to potentially escape a much larger repair bill in the future.
