🍂 Hillside Fall Checklist

Heating & Home Comfort
  • Schedule Heating Oil Delivery if you have a furnace or boiler, so you are ready before the first cold snap.
  • Arrange for an annual tune-up of your heating system if you have not had one since last season. This ensures safe, efficient operation.
  • Adjust your programmable thermostat so your heat kicks in when cold weather arrives. Check and replace batteries if needed.
  • Check and replace air filters to keep your system running smoothly.
  • Make sure air vents are not blocked by furniture or rugs so warm air circulates properly.
  • Stock up on extra furnace filters so you can easily swap them out during the season.
Outdoor Prep
  • Turn off the water supply to exterior faucets and drain the pipes to prevent freezing and bursts.
  • If you would rather not rake, mulch fallen leaves with your lawnmower. They will break down over winter and feed your lawn.
  • Winterize your lawnmower before storing it: clean blades, empty the gas tank, and change the oil.
  • Inspect your roof and gutters. Clear leaves and debris to prevent ice dams and water damage.
Snow & Ice Readiness
  • Get your snow and ice removal tools ready: shovels, snowblowers, and ice melt. Make sure your snowblower has gas.
  • Put an ice scraper and a small shovel in your car, in case you are caught out during the first storm.
  • Create a winter emergency kit for your home and car: flashlights, batteries, blankets, bottled water, and canned food.
Energy Savings & Protection
  • Inspect weather stripping and caulking on doors and windows, replacing or repairing as needed to prevent heat loss.
  • Reverse your ceiling fans to clockwise on low. This gently pushes warm air back down into your living space.
  • Check insulation in attics and basements to avoid costly heat loss.
  • Seal gaps around pipes, vents, and outlets to block drafts and pests.
Safety First
  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries. Heating season is when they matter most.
  • Have your chimney and fireplace inspected and cleaned if you plan to use them this winter.
