Thermostats Can Save You Money and Headaches

Programmable thermostats don’t just look fancy—they have tons of features for energy and cost savings. They can control the temperature of your house 24/7 so you don’t have to worry. With a quality thermostat, you save money in the summer and winter, and your home is at your desired temperature when you get home from work.

Even better, you have full control of your home climate and thermostat from any location! Hillside installs remotely accessible thermostats that you can access anywhere you are with an Internet connection or a smartphone app. Unlike other providers, we charge just a one-time fee for our thermostats. There are no monthly or maintenance fees beyond the initial cost of installation.

Keeping the environment in mind, you can use energy wisely while maintaining comfort. Turn your thermostat down a few degrees when you are not home and at bedtime to save energy. Make sure your home heating system is working efficiently by having it regularly serviced (once or twice a year, depending on the type of system). This ensures that the equipment is free of dirt or buildup. Replace your system’s air filters as recommended so air can get through. A dirty heating unit works extra hard, and it may start to work intermittently or not at all.

Central Air vs. Window Units and Old Homes | We Get This a Lot!

Hillside is proud to announce the arrival of our new Frequently Asked Questions video series, “We Get This a Lot!”

Join Jim Sellers, the CEO and main man of Hillside Oil, Heating, and Cooling, as he reads your FAQs on all things HVAC.

In our inaugural episode of “We Get This a Lot!”, we cover two very important questions of central air conditioning woes. First, whether central air or a collection of window units are more efficient. Secondly, we review mini split systems, the solution to setting up central air when your house just isn’t set up for it. A common example would be when your house is too old and is not properly set up for central air. Say hello to mini split systems and feel your house become conditioned to easy living.

When to Call in an HVAC Expert

There have been a lot of impressive advances in home comfort products over the years, with some recent examples being smart thermostats and wireless zoning controls. It’s easy to find these and dozens of other high-tech products at home improvement stores or through the Internet.

We know that for a fact because a lot of people purchase these items and then try to install them on their own. But that’s when problems begin. We’ve responded quite a few times to situations where major damage occurred to heating and cooling systems because people thought they could set up these products on their own.

We understand the attraction of being a do-it-yourselfer to save money. But you really need to draw the line when it comes to heating, cooling and other home comfort equipment installation. Those jobs are best left to professionals.

We know you want more than just the best price or the top brand name—you want the best people, and the best company, to install these products and keep them working properly.

Anyone can open a store or create a website to sell you the “latest and greatest” home comfort product. But not everyone can guarantee you the kind of professional installation and ongoing maintenance that will keep you enjoying both optimum comfort and value for years to come.

We hope you will take advantage of our expertise, which in the long run will save you time, money and stress.

Please contact us today for expert advice from a local, family-owned company that has been delivering comfort and value to our valued customers for three generations and more than 60 years.

Test Run Your Air Conditioner

Easy Spring Thaw HVAC Prep You Can Do Now

Spring Thaw…Is Really Happening

Snow is all gone and there are signs of life again! The heater isn’t kicking-on constantly. Rabbits are venturing out. Water is trickling through the gutters as the snow disappears from the roof. I see grass! Life is good. BUT before you start making summer plans, it’s time to do a little “spring cleaning” to your home.

Daylight Saving Time has begun. That means, if you haven’t already done so, it is time to replace the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors (if they require replacing). Smoke detectors without operable batteries do nothing to protect you and your family from a house fire. Fresh batteries are a minimal investment in your wellbeing and your family’s safety. So grab a pack of 9-volt batteries next time you are out and about. Batteries are readily available in grocery stores, home centers, pharmacies, and hardware stores, so, no excuses! Check that off the list for peace of mind.

That water trickling down your gutters is a good indication that they are now free of ice and snow. It is also a good time, as water is moving through them, to check for any faults caused by the harsh winter weather we have had. The expansion power of ice can push or twist gutters and other things it contacts. Look for water leaks and check to make sure the gutters are not loose and are still sloping toward a downspout. Clear the gutters of any debris (twigs, leaves) that might have been deposited into the gutters and then hidden beneath the snow. Check this off your list, and you’ll be ready for those free-falling April showers.

Finally, it’s time to make sure your HVAC filters are clean so that air is moving freely through them and the air quality in your home is optimal. If you have fiberglass filters, they likely need replacing monthly. HEPA filters should be replaced minimally every six months, or however often is recommended for your heating and cooling system. A HEPA filter can be brushed off or vacuumed to freshen it up.

While you may not be ready to turn the air conditioner on YET, that time is coming soon enough. (It’s a distant memory, but do you remember what sweating feels like?) Beat the rush, and schedule your annual air conditioner maintenance with Hillside HVAC now so that it’s in great working order when it really counts.

Call Hillside HVAC now to schedule your next air conditioner service appointment. Make it a part of your regular “spring cleaning!”

Happy Tax Day! Now go test run your air conditioner

Don’t get caught unprepared for the heat

It is only April and nobody wants to turn on their air conditioner yet. However right now is the perfect time to give your unit a “test run”. The hottest weather will be here before we know it. Hillside suggests giving your unit a few hours of run time before the heat comes and stays. This could avoid aggravation later when you turn on your air conditioning unit for good.

Need service or considering a tune-up on your air conditioner? Consider Hillside. A tune-up of your air conditioning system can pay for itself over time. A tuned-up system is more likely to perform optimally, most efficiently, and avoid untimely breakdowns.

See if an air conditioner tune-up is right for you.

Don’t get caught on the first 90-degree day this summer in the uncomfortable heat. Try out your air conditioner soon to make sure it is going to be there when you need it in a few weeks.

Don’t have air conditioning? Hillside can help with that too! Hillside does installations of all types of indoor air comfort systems, including ductless air conditioners.
