Avoid No Heat Situations or Trust Hillside for a Solution

Help! I Have No Heat!

If you’ve ever gone without heat in the middle of winter, you know how uncomfortable that can be, not to mention, risky for your plumbing as water in the pipes begins to freeze. During extreme weather – piles of snow and extremely low temperatures outside – going without heat can even be dangerous. How can you avoid this scenario?

Running out of heating fuel—that’s a very common scenario, unfortunately, and completely avoidable. Hillside HVAC offers our heating oil customers the option of automatic delivery. This gives our customers peace of mind that the tank will never go empty, and it doesn’t cost a penny more for this service! Some companies like to charge extra for the service of automatic delivery. Extra charges for automatic delivery are not necessary as this service is not only a convenience for the customer but also for our company.

Hillside uses a proven, industry-standard mathematical formula that is computer-calculated to know when a customer is in need of an oil delivery. The degree-days formula uses all past history of customer deliveries in combination with local weather to forecast when deliveries are needed. New accounts are based on an average of similar size homes in your area.*

Heating system failure or fuel tank failure: When your tank is not empty but the heating system has stopped blowing hot air, this is a mechanical failure of sorts, and Hillside has a full-service department to fix or replace equipment, no matter the type of system you have, to quickly restore heat to your home. Our service trucks are fully stocked to handle most service issues in 1 visit.

Home Heating Safety and Tips

As the weather turns suddenly bitter cold with howling winds and the promise of snow, many will turn to using space heaters as an additional source of heat in drafty rooms. While a space heater might be just the remedy for those challenging spaces on extra chilly days, please bear in mind that they also pose a certain hazard. The U.S. Fire Administration states that half of all home heating fires happen in December through February and that space heaters account for one-third of home heating fires.*

With proper precautions, space heaters can be a safe auxiliary to your regular home heating system when and where you really need them. First and foremost, it’s important to read and adhere to the manufacturer’s guidelines on how and where to safely operate the space heater. They should never be used too close to combustible materials, such as drapery, clothing or bedding, which could ignite and spread fire throughout the home. Space heaters should also have a cord that is in good condition (not frayed or chewed) and adequate to carry the electrical load. Some extension cords are not adequate and could overheat and cause a fire.

Some of you might also turn to wood-burning fireplaces as an additional source of heat to take the chill off a room. Failure to clean the creosote that builds up inside the chimney is a leading cause of home fires. Make sure your fireplace chimney is cleaned once a year by a professional chimney sweep and that you use a glass or metal mesh screen in front of the fireplace opening to prevent hot cinders from escaping into the room.

We hope that when the wind is howling outside your windows that you and your loved ones are toasty and safe inside.

Charlie’s safety tips checklist:

  • Keep combustible items (clothing, curtains, upholstery, bedding, rugs, etc.) 3 feet or more from space heaters and fireplaces.
  • Make sure power cords for heating sources are adequate to handle the electric load so they don’t overheat and cause a fire.
  • If using an alternative heater that requires fuel, such as kerosene, never refill it while hot and always refuel it outdoors using only the fuel recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Never use a kitchen range as a source to heat your home. It is a fire hazard!
  • Make sure you have a smoke detector on every level of your home, and replace the batteries every 6 months to ensure they’re working.
  • Have a CO alarm in your home to detect deadly, invisible carbon monoxide gas, especially if you use a backup power generator.

Snow tips and offer from Hillside & Charlie the Dog

More snow is expected today, Consider automatic delivery to ensure you never run out of heating oil.

Heating Oil Prices Forecasted Lower this Winter

Heating Oil Prices Forecasted Lower this Winter

Usual disclaimer, we here at Hillside do not claim to be smarter than the average bear. This is information we are passing along from the US Energy Information Administration…With a name like that, they must be important.

This fall the U.S. Energy Information Administration published a winter fuels outlook that projects slightly lower heating fuel costs for those who heat their homes with oil. EIA predicts an average household will spend 2 percent less on home heating oil this winter than last winter. This is good news for many Hillside HVAC customers who depend on us to get you through the winter, although the real savings won’t be entirely known until we see how cold outside temperatures get this winter. EIA forecasts that our area of the country will only be about 3 percent colder than last year, but we know that weather forecasts aren’t perfect!

Those of you who use natural gas to heat your homes won’t be as lucky this winter. EIA predicts an average household will spend 13 percent more this winter than last winter on natural gas. This translates to roughly $80 extra over the course of the winter.

Aside from local weather conditions, other variables impact the cost of heating your home, such as worldwide supply of fuels, regional demand, energy efficiency of your home and efficiency of your heating equipment, and the temperature to which you set your thermostat.

Here’s what you can do to increase your cost savings this winter:

Turn your thermostat down a couple of degrees; your body will naturally acclimate to the new inside temperature. “Acclimatization usually occurs over a period of about two weeks in healthy, normal persons,” says Dr. G. Edgar Folk, physiology professor in the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. “This process is faster in response to heat, but slower in the cold.”

Maintain your heating equipment so its components are free of dirt and its filters are clean and “breathable.” When equipment is clean and working properly, it operates more efficiently to heat your home.

Programmable Thermostats
A programmable thermostat can save you money this winter when you use it to automatically adjust the temperature of your home to cooler temperatures at night or during regular periods of time that you are away from the house, such as during work hours. This way, the house isn’t being fully heated when it doesn’t need to be, saving you money on your home heating bill. Hillside HVAC installs programmable thermostats that don’t require a monthly fee to use or monitor it. There is even a type of programmable thermostat that you can remotely access by smartphone or anywhere you have the Internet!
