Outdoor Heating Oil Tank Gelling Problems

Was your outdoor heating oil tank a victim of the recent cold weather?

When the temperature outdoors gets to a severe low, the heating oil in your tank may thicken. What happens is a gelling process where heating oil doesn’t freeze but thickens or gels like a soft wax-like material, the reason being that the paraffin or wax in heating oil starts to crystallize, separating itself from the oil compound. The recent cold snap was the coldest it has been in years. The heating oil in our region is now ultra low sulfur, and we are not sure how these changes to the actual fuel are impacted by severe cold weather. Our local refineries “winterize” fuels based on our region, and this recent cold was not the norm for our region.

With above-ground outdoor tanks, heating oil gelling is common with very low temperatures. If a homeowner isn’t aware of that potential issue and the steps they need to take to prevent it, the gelling or thickening of the heating oil in the tank can cause clogs in fuel filters and lines and also result in less heating oil going to the oil burner.

1. You can purchase fuel additive from us and we can add it during your oil delivery or it is also sold at hardware stores and you can add it after a heating oil delivery. This can prevent fuel gelling.

2. For improved oil flow to the oil burner consider installing a fuel line with a larger diameter. You can also wrap any pipes and fuel lines that are outside with a heat tape material. Make sure that all openings are well sealed in order to prevent contact with the cold air and/or ground surface.

3. Change or have your oil filter changed annually for best performance and make sure it is installed indoors which is the norm for most heating system installations. If your oil filter is outdoors the chances for it clogging and freezing are far greater. It is best if the filter is indoors close to the furnace or within a heated shed.

As always, Hillside is here to help.

Check Your Heating Oil Tank Gauge

Check your heating oil tank gauge, if you have not already

The upcoming forecast says we are going to have another cold snap. If you have not done it recently, consider this your reminder to check your heating oil level. Right now we are scheduled several days in advance for customers who have already ordered. Rush and same day deliveries are unfortunately not an option for us this time of year. Our drivers can only work so many hours, the sun is only out so long, and our trucks only hold so much heating oil. Our motto is, “When you’re on a quarter, order.” If you are at that level or lower, it is good time to place an order for heating oil.

If you are not already on automatic delivery, it is never a bad time to consider this FREE option from Hillside. We are one of the few companies that do NOT charge extra for the convenient service of automatic delivery. You can visit our website for more information and see how the automatic delivery program works, or enroll: www.hillsidehvac.com/heating-oil-delivery

What is the importance of a vent pipe and whistle?

As oil is being pumped into a heating oil tank from your fill pipe, it displaces air. The air flows out of the vent pipe, which causes the whistling sound. When the vent pipe stops whistling, this indicates to our driver the tank is full. In most cases that is true, but sometimes your vent could be clogged with dirt, cobwebs, insects, etc… Without a working whistle, a driver can not put fuel in a basement tank. Sometimes our delivery driver can clear the clog while on site. In the event of an extreme blockage, a service technician may be needed.

Under normal operation (when we are not filling) your vent is designed to relieve the vacuum created from your oil burner pulling oil from the tank.

It is important during winter months to make sure snow and ice are cleared from your fill and vent pipe, as well as having a clear path to your fill for our delivery drivers.

Fuel tank empty?

Oil Tank EmptyFuel tank empty? An incentive to never let that happen again.

“The house was quickly cooling, and the water coming out of the “hot” tap was stone cold. In the cold of winter, and icy shower was going to be really unpleasant. I couldn’t understand it. And then the repairman explained it to me: “You’ve run out of home heating oil.” Oh.

Leaking Heating Oil Tanks Can Be Serious

The consequences of a leaky heating oil tank can be quite serious. Some extremes are environmental damage, personal health and safety, fines, and the cost of cleanup.

Homeowners insurance, as you may know, makes homeowners responsible for upkeep and maintenance. Homeowners insurance does not pay for things like worn out roofs, siding, etc… Your heating oil tank is no different. Just like anything in your home, nothing lasts forever. Homeowners insurance is essentially “accident” insurance. Your home heating oil tank is something you should take a peek at several times a year to make sure it looks OK.

A leaky oil tank can cause damage, which most insurance companies will not cover. If an oil leak occurs, you could incur the heavy expense of having the soil surrounding your tank removed and replaced. Oil-soaked dirt is expensive to dispose of. If your leak damages other people’s property or public land, you could be facing legal costs and fines as well as the cost of repairing the damage.

For the most part, this can be avoided with regular tank inspections. If something does not look right to you, it probably is not right. Check the tank legs and make sure they are not missing, rusted, buckled or bent. Make sure the leg brackets are not cracked or coming away from the tank.

Check the platform of the tank, or blocks under the legs, to ensure it isn’t cracked or deformed.

Look for rust on metal tanks. Run your hands over the tank and connectors to detect warps, dents, weeping or wet spots. Statistics show that the bottoms usually leak first. Hillside does offer a heating oil tank warranty, the Tank-Guard program. This program pays for replacement of your heating oil tank if it leaks while enrolled, BUT does not cover any expense related to clean up, etc…

If you suspect a leak call us as soon as possible. We will send a technician out to assess the situation and contain the leak. We can also replace or install your new tank. If you have any questions or concerns, please give us a call 302-738-4144 or 410-398-2146.

How long do oil tanks last?

Oil tanks last many years, but they eventually give out.

Life spans vary depending on the humidity, the thickness of the steel and more. And when tanks do fail, it’s hard to see it coming, because they can erode from the inside out.

If your tank is more than 30 years old, we recommend replacing it.

Today’s oil tanks are light-years ahead of the old models.

The new generation of Roth aboveground tanks we install are the most environmentally safe tanks available. They feature a sleek design and double-wall construction that includes an outer tank of corrosion-resistant galvanized steel.

When we replace your old tank, we can also bring your fuel lines up to code. This provides even more insurance against leaks.
